Remember when selecting a saddle remember the seat and above the tree are for the rider.  However the tree and below belongs to the horse. Tree shape, panel type and design are there for your horses comfort. See below for more information about saddle choices. 


Dressage Saddles

Dressage saddles are designed for flat-work and dressage competitions.  Features include;

  • Extended stirrup bar that is set further back

  • Straighter flap shape and longer flap to accommodate a longer leg position

  • Flap length is usually a standard 17"

  • Deeper seat

  • Panel choices and tree shapes to fit your horses' individual conformation

General Purpose Saddles

General Purpose aka All Purpose saddle are designed to give support to riders that want to foxhunt, trail ride, low level dressage and schooling or jump up to 3'. They are also a great option for starting young horses.  The features include;

  • Jump position stirrup bar

  • Deeper seat for more secure jumping

  • More stable knee rolls, usually longer

  • Straighter flap and longer flaps then jump saddles

  • Flap length is usually a standard 15"

  • May or may not have thigh blocks


Jumping/Close Contact Saddles

Jumping/Close Contact saddles are designed for a forward seat style of riding. The seat is only for a half seated position with shorter to very short stirrup lengths for show jumping or cross country riding. Features include;

  • Stirrup bar is at the jump position

  • Flaps are shorter from 12.5" to 14" in length

  • The flaps are either more forward for shorter thigh length or more forward deep/er for people with longer thigh length

  • The seat profile is flatter and less wide

  • The pommel is lower

Pony Saddles

Pony saddles are designed with a different balance point especially for a pony's back.  These saddles come in dressage, general purpose, and jump.  Features include;

  • Generally have less panel

  • Flatter panels

  • Short panels

  • Smaller trees for shorter backs and smaller riders

  • More forward balance point because ponies have smaller vertebrae
